Therapy using fragrance has a long history, dating as far back as about five thousand years, the time of ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia. Clay boards discovered from remains contain records showing that fragrant plants were already used as a medicine in those days. Kanebo, hoping that “fragrance” which has been highly valued as a cosmetic care from way back, would also have some beneficial effects on our skin, has pursued research on fragrant materials from various angles. We have been studying the mechanism of hyaluronic acid synthesis in the skin for well over a decade, and have just recently examined the stimulatory effect of fragrance ingredients on hyaluronic acid synthesis. And we finally discovered Saffron and Muscone, fragrance ingredients which stimulate the synthesis of hyaluronic acid in the epidermal keratinocytes and dermal fibroblasts respectively, out of about a hundred kinds of fragrance materials. And it is the Sensai Premier Line that contains those ingredients.
For Sensai Premier, Kanebo has additionally developed an original fragrance inspired by the mystical qualities of moonlight, which we call Tsuki no Hana, or Moon Flower, Fragrance. The delicate, relaxing fragrance features the extracts of the evening primrose, called Tsukimisou or Moon Viewing Plant in Japanese; the tuberose, called Gekkasou or Under-the-Moon Plant; and the Queen of the Night, called Gekkabijin, or Night Beauty - a large white cactus orchid that magically blooms only at night. During application of Sensai Premier, exotic tuberose top notes are first released, followed by comforting floral middle notes. The fragrance lingers after application, prolonging the sense of calm and dreaminess.

Moon Flower Fragrance also features two other special aroma ingredients with proven skincare benefits
Muscone is the aroma agent of natural musk. It helps activate the hyaluronic acid synthesis in the dermal fibroblasts.

Saffron has a sweet, mellow and fruity aroma. It helps activate the hyaluronic acid synthesis in the epidermal keratinocytes.

These ingredients are the result of extensive Kanebo research into over 100 aroma agents. Thanks to their presence, Moon Flower Fragrance has the remarkable capacity to promote hyaluronic acid synthesis in both the epidermal and dermal cells, thus reinforcing the benefits of o ther Sensai ingredients. This exclusive feature reflects Kanebo's acclaimed multidisciplinary research in aromachology, botanical science, and neurology. It also raises Moon Flower Fragrance to the level of a ‘treatment fragrance’.
Here we can see the results of two tests measuring the effect of muscone and saffron on hyaluronic acid synthesis in the dermal fibroblasts and epidermal keratinocytes, respectively. Effect of Muscone on Hyaluronic Acid synthesis in fibroblasts (left): The amount of hyaluronic acid synthesized in the dermal fibroblasts rose in direct proportion to the concentration of muscone, rising approximately 42% compared to that of no addition (control). Effect of Saffron on Hyaluronic Acid synthesis in keratinocytes (right): Essential oil of saffron had a similar effect in the epidermal cells, causing hyaluronic acid content to rise by about 40% compared to that of no addition (control).
